Latest news…March 22nd

Cathal Donaghue enjoyed a profitable week, winning one event and finishing on the podium in another. His Wednesday Open success came courtesy of a remarkable back nine in which the Glenties lad birdied Roaninish (11), Sweeney’s Bank (14) and O’Boyle’s Fort (18). These beauties allied to the other four pars recorded coming home gave him 24 points, almost as many as I had in the whole round at the weekend! What must have gone through his mind on the third tee after recording two blanks to start! His overall total of 38 pipped Kevin McCready by a shot.

Gerald McDwyer won the St. Patrick’s Day stableford by the narrowest of margins, with several players all on the same score. His par at the last proved the crucial score as it separated him from the rest of the field. His success would have been assured had he not earlier blanked the short but deadly ‘High Altar’, three holes from home. There were enough good scores on his round, however, with the birdie on the third (‘Rampar’) the highlight.

Colette Maloney from Dungloe is a volunteer with Maynooth Mission Outreach which was formed in 1995. She is travelling to Peru for six weeks in June and will work with destitute children in Chaclacayo. Her visit can be followed on www.villalapazfoundation.org. Narin and Portnoo Golf Club is proud to support Colette in her work.

Frank McDaid showed his class at the weekend, rolling back the years with a fine victory in the Diver’s Centra competition. He made good use of the wind on the front nine, going out in twenty points but as the wind rose in intensity, he battled to keep his score intact coming home. On the eighteenth tee, he must have known that he would need a big finish to win through, and that’s exactly what the former Ulster cup star achieved, his birdie a classy way to win any golf tournament.

The club sends its sympathy to Pete Shovlin, Bruckless on the death of his mother, Margaret who was buried in Bruckless on Sunday. May she rest in peace.
